If these tactics still do not restore control, things may worsen. This stage can involve threats, intimidation, and sometimes what people describe as rage. They may try to force you back into submission and into the role they want you to play. This may include threatening body language, breaking things, screaming, demands, and attempts to intimidate you into compliance. Even if you have done nothing wrong, they may interpret the situation as “war.”
6) Smear campaigns may intensify
If they feel they are losing control of you and the situation, they may try to control how others see you. This is often when smear campaigns increase. They may spread lies and gross exaggerations to anyone who will listen, aiming to damage your reputation and your support system. They may also portray themselves as victims while claiming you are unstable or deceitful. The goal is often to isolate you—so you have no one who believes you or can support you.
7) Financial exploitation may become severe
They may attempt to cripple you financially. This can include draining accounts, cutting off access to money, stealing funds or assets, refusing to provide support for you and your children, and interfering with your ability to pay for necessities. At this stage, the priority may shift to taking as much as possible and undermining your ability to survive.
8) Stalking, hacking, harassment, and intimidation may occur
You may experience stalking, hacking, harassment, or terrorizing behaviors. They may try to interfere with your work, follow you, threaten people connected to you, and even target your children. Their aim may be to increase psychological pressure and intimidation—often with behaviors that are difficult to catch or prove. Unfortunately, these tactics can provoke reactions from you that others might misinterpret.
9) Legal manipulation and exploitation may start
If children are involved, they may involve child protection authorities or make false allegations. If family court is involved, they may seek custody, attempt to obtain the home, money, assets, and control over key aspects of your life. They may lie to authorities or manufacture “evidence” to make you pay. False allegations of abuse and domestic violence can also be used.
