They may switch their approach to being especially loving, charming, and attentive, as they were at the beginning. If you begin asking questions that could lead to exposure or accountability, they may respond with gaslighting. They might deny what happened, rewrite events, or blame someone else. The goal is to make you disregard new discoveries or concerns.
2) Guilt-tripping and a major pity display may follow
If love-bombing and gaslighting do not work, the next step may be guilt and a large pity narrative. They may act as though you are hurting them for pulling away. They may insist they have done nothing wrong and that it is unfair you are questioning them. They may highlight every “good” thing they claim to have done and try to make you feel ungrateful. They may also bring up a difficult childhood, stress, or feeling overworked, while framing you as cruel and unappreciative.
3) Projection and blame-shifting may increase
If guilt and pity still do not work, they may begin projecting—claiming that you are the one who has done wrong. They may throw past “confessions” or things you shared with them back in your face. The focus becomes deflection: shifting attention away from their behavior and toward you and whatever negative material they can use to muddy the situation.
This phase can be especially difficult, because they may accuse you of things you did not do, or exaggerate what happened. In tense moments, it can be tempting to defend yourself and get pulled into their narrative. Do not take the bait. This is often a calculated effort to move attention off them and onto you.
4) Triangulation and smear tactics may be used
If projection and blame-shifting fail, they may try to triangulate you through stories that imply other people see your perspective as wrong, exaggerated, or “crazy.” They may also recruit others to persuade you that you are mistaken and overreacting. This stage can create significant confusion and cognitive dissonance, especially when third parties join in gaslighting. Recognizing what triangulation and gaslighting look like is critical.
