One: the face of infantile innocence.
An aging narcissist can suddenly start behaving like a completely harmless child trapped inside an old body. You remember them as a fierce dictator who knew exactly how to humiliate you, punish you, and control the entire atmosphere of the house. But now they soften their voice. They act confused. They pretend they do not understand why you’re so distant from them. They look almost wounded when you bring up the terrible things they did in the past.
They will look you right in the eye and say things like, “What did I even do to you?” or “I’m old now. I just want peace.”
This is exactly what makes the infantile innocence mask so incredibly powerful. They stop defending their past behavior. Instead, they just shrink themselves down until confronting them feels like you’re attacking someone fragile. They make you feel like a bully. Slowly the focus moves completely away from what they did to you and shifts onto how guilty you feel for remembering it.
They want you to drop your heavy armor because they look so weak. But the moment you drop your guard, they will start using you again.
If you see completely through this childish mask and refuse to let them play the innocent victim, I want you to drop the word “grounded” in the comments right now, because you need to stay firm in your reality today and forever.
I would say the second phase: the sick and helpless phase.
An aging narcissist will suddenly start having mysterious health crisis exactly when your attention is somewhere else.
One day they are functioning perfectly normally. They’re talking, walking, managing their money, and even arguing with you perfectly well. Then, the exact moment you become distant—make weekend plans, stop calling them every day, or finally start living your own life—dramatic changes happen. They feel faint. They say they cannot breathe properly. They suddenly become extremely weak, or they create a massive health scare that pulls everybody right back into their house.
Notice the timing: the crisis magically appears when they feel ignored, and it completely disappears once everyone is surrounding them and worried about them again.
This is how they use sickness as a weapon to keep people emotionally tied to them. It’s a brilliant evil trap. You stop asking, “Is this manipulation?” Because now you’re too busy asking in a panic: “What if something really happens to them this time?”
And that heavy fear becomes a leash they use to walk you. They will drain your schedule, ruin your holidays, and hijack your peace—all while hiding behind a fake cough or a sudden limp.
