Narcissists in general are shape-shifters, but an aging narcissist is the ultimate shape-shifter. When you were a kid, they easily controlled you with a heavy hand. They used their loud voice, their money, and their size to boss you around. But time changes everything. You grew up. You got your own job, perhaps. Somehow you got your place—and your own mind.
The moment you became an independent adult, they realized they could not just yell at you to get their way anymore. So, what does a narcissist do when their favorite weapons stop working? They simply change their strategy. They trade their anger for pity. If they cannot force you to obey them, they will try to make you feel deeply guilty.
Instead, they put on completely new masks. Suddenly, the same person who ruined your peace for decades starts acting like a fragile, confused, and harmless senior citizen. They use their age to make you look like the bad guy if you dare set a small boundary. They know you have a good heart. They know you care about people. So, they take your natural kindness and use it as a trap to pull you back in.
It is incredibly confusing—and deeply painful—to watch the exact person who caused you so much trauma suddenly act like a saint who never did anything wrong.
