Self-reflection would be like catching a glimpse of themselves in a mirror without the makeup, lighting, or stage props—and realizing that the audience they’ve worked so hard to impress might not like the unedited version. That kind of unfiltered reality is their worst nightmare because it threatens to collapse the elaborate theater that not only fools others, but has convinced—and fooled—them as well.

To them, self-reflection isn’t an exercise in growth. It’s stepping into quicksand—certain they’ll be swallowed whole. So they don’t just sidestep it. They run from it as if their survival depends on it.

The moment a thought dares to approach that might suggest they’re anything less than perfect, this guard dog lunges, bearing its teeth in the form of deflection, projection, or venomous counterattacks.
