If playing the victim works, they’ll keep using it — sometimes faking illness, injury, or crisis to pull you back in and insist you’re the only one who can help. Narcissists are skilled actors. When confronted with someone more powerful than them, they’ll appear weak and submissive to win back trust — only to use that trust to pull you down again.
Their goal is total dominance, regardless of the cost. Bringing a strong person to their knees gives them a distorted sense of superiority. Once they’ve extracted what they need from you, they discard you.
If charm and victimhood don’t work, they have one option left: working through people close to you. Since they haven’t had time to learn your weaknesses directly, they’ll target your friends or family instead — winning their favor in order to turn them against you. Their goal isn’t just to dislike or leave you; they want participation from everyone around you. This often means spreading rumors, sabotaging your reputation, even at work — making false accusations to get you removed from your position.
When a narcissist realizes you have more respect or popularity than they do, they become obsessed with knocking you down. They’re terrified of what you might do to them. They’ll lie, cheat, and steal if that’s what it takes to regain control. What truly irritates them is when people see through their constructed persona and refuse to fall for their traps.
Stay alert. A narcissist will never stop trying to bring you down to their level — exercise caution, and don’t let your guard down.
