Under most circumstances, telling the truth will save your relationship with someone you really care for. But when you’re dealing with a narcissist, it’s the opposite. Telling the truth can keep you from getting completely destroyed—and highlighted.
Why? Because when you tell a narcissist the truth, it’s like handing someone a loaded gun and pointing it at your own chest. Normal people use your honesty to understand you and get closer to you. Narcissists use your honesty to drag your weaknesses into the light.
You know very well they do not want a partner. They want an inventory of your assets so they know exactly where to strike later. If you give them your real, raw feelings, you’re simply showing them where your castle walls are weak—and that’s where they strike.
To survive an emotional predator like this, you have to feed their system bad data. Think of it like a computer virus. If you feed their software corrupted information, their ability to manipulate you glitches out.
This is not about being a bad person. It’s tactical self-defense. You’re putting up a smoke screen so they cannot see your real self.
