Not necessarily because they changed, healed, or finally understood your worth, but because your absence is now affecting their sense of power and identity. They begin testing whether they still have emotional access to you.
A random message appears out of nowhere. A fake apology suddenly arrives late at night. They may say they miss you, regret everything, or cannot stop thinking about you. And for a moment, this can feel validating—especially if you spent years begging them to care while you were together. It may even feel confusing because now they seem more emotional than ever before.
But what many people fail to understand is this: narcissists often react the strongest when they lose certainty, not when they lose love. The moment they realize you are truly emotionally unavailable, you become psychologically valuable again in their eyes. Because narcissists often take people for granted when they feel secure and in control. But once that control disappears, obsession can suddenly replace indifference.
This is why some narcissists become desperate after a breakup. They may stalk your social media constantly without interacting. They may ask mutual friends about your life behind the scenes. They may suddenly try to improve themselves publicly to trigger your attention. Some even enter new relationships quickly just to prove they still have value.
