An aging narcissist deliberately goes after younger, more naive people because they have less life experience and are incredibly easy to impress, influence, and control. This is one of the most pathetic and embarrassing ways an aging narcissist tries to remain relevant.
Instead of earning actual respect from people their own age—people who can easily see right through their fake mask—they choose someone much younger who has not yet learned how predators like them operate. They look for a specific kind of vulnerability. They hunt for someone dealing with loneliness, a lack of family support, deep career struggles, or somebody who simply needs a mentor or financial guidance.
The narcissist swoops in, playing the role of the generous savior. They offer financial help, incredible opportunities, big favors, or career connections first. But this is never a genuine gift from the heart. It’s a very expensive trap.
Once they hook this younger person, they slowly begin to squeeze them. They use that initial favor to demand constant attention, blind admiration, absolute obedience, and total control. They buy a young person’s loyalty because they can no longer earn a mature adult’s respect.
Their peers remember the decades of lies, the brutal betrayals, and the emotional destruction they left behind. But this new younger person only sees the shiny fake exterior. The narcissist will parade this younger persona around, showing them off to the world to prove that they’re still important, still loved, and still powerful. But everyone else watching just feels complete secondhand embarrassment.
We all know they’re just renting an audience because their original audience finally walked out of the theater.
