Even when a narcissist tries their hardest to fake compassion, their rehearsed performance completely fails in these environments.
It is very much like the old belief that a devil cannot cross the threshold of a sacred church. In the same way, a narcissist avoids these specific places like a dark spirit running away from something holy. In these environments, there is absolutely no room to manufacture fake empathy, no strategy to dominate the room, and no opportunity to turn another person’s deep pain, pure joy, hard-earned achievement, or raw vulnerability into something about themselves. In these spaces, the narcissist is forced to stand completely naked beside something real—something they cannot control, copy, or minimize. And that is exactly what burns them to their core.
