The most dangerous time to be around a narcissist is right after they lose everything. When their power is stripped away, they do not just retreat into the shadows. They mutate. And this is exactly when most survivors make a foolish, devastating mistake.
You fail to see through this brand-new disguise—the mask they forge in the dark that you never knew existed. You lower your guard, and that one single mistake is exactly what traps people for 20, 30, or even 40 more years. You look at this broken, mellow person and genuinely believe the downfall has finally fixed them.
But a narcissist does not feel real grief, does it? By giving you the peaceful, humble version of themselves you always begged for, they’re quietly setting a trap. They are waiting to snap their jaws around your neck the exact moment you reach out to help them.
When a normal person goes through a massive downfall like losing their career, going bankrupt, losing their looks, having stolen-age exposed, or having their toxic behavior exposed to the whole family, they reflect on their life. A normal person feels heavy sadness, real guilt, and a desire to rebuild their life honestly.
But a narcissist does not have a solid core, do they? They do not have a real personality under their fake image. So when their entire kingdom burns to the ground, they do not stand in the ashes and try to learn a lesson. Instead, they become like a chameleon standing in the gray wasteland. They simply change their skin to match the ashes. This is the phase of their downfall that completely tricks the outside world—and it is the phase that is most likely to ruin the rest of your life, because their aggressive, loud, and proud mask was completely destroyed by their failure.
