We’re not just talking about the physical exhaustion of crying over the terrible things a narcissist says to you. We’re talking about a complete lack of biological hydration. When you are in a permanent state of high alert, your body stops producing the normal soothing moisture that keeps your eyes bright and healthy. It’s like looking into a deep well that has been completely dried up by the hot sun. The spark and the shine literally vanish from your face. Your eyes ache; they feel scratchy and look hollow because your body is using every single drop of water and energy to manage the extreme emotional heat of the relationship.
This massive daily drain brings us to the heaviest physical sign of all.
Number six: bone-deep physical exhaustion.
You wake up completely drained. This does not improve with sleep. Normally, sleep is when your body repairs itself, absorbs nutrients, and recharges its battery. But when you’re sleeping next to a narcissist or living under the same control, your brain never actually powers down. Even with your eyes closed, you subconsciously stand guard. You listen for their footsteps and replay the terrible argument from earlier that day. You wake up in this state — it’s exactly like plugging your smartphone into a broken charger all night. You wake up and the battery is still at 1%. You are waking up physically starved because your brain fought a silent war the entire time you were supposedly resting.
And finally, this total exhaustion forces your muscles to start screaming for help.
Number seven: muscle twitching and cramps.
You may notice your eyelid jumping all day, a muscle in your arm randomly twitching, or painful cramps in your legs at night. When you’re dealing with a narcissist, your body is stiff. You are literally bracing your muscles for a physical blow, even if the abuse is entirely emotional. Keeping your muscles flexed and tight for so many hours a day burns through a massive amount of minerals. It’s like stretching a thick rubber band as hard as you can for months at a time. Eventually the rubber band starts to tremble and shake before it snaps. Your muscles twitch because they are completely starved of the relaxation and basic minerals they desperately need to finally let go.
When you look at all these physical signs together, you finally realize the absolute truth.
You’re not going crazy, and you do not just have a mysterious medical problem. You’re dealing with a person who is literally extracting your life force. You cannot outsmart a starving body, and you cannot heal a physical shell that is constantly preparing for a narcissist to attack again. The only way to stop your hair from falling out, warm your hands, and finally take a deep breath is to completely cut off the source of the panic. You have to remove the narcissist from your reality so your nervous system can realize the war is over and your body can slowly begin to feed itself again.
